Time we went to bed

It is time to go to bed.
It's time we went to bed.

Are they the same meaning? Could anyone explain???

Top answer

They have about the same meaning. The first one is just a comment about the time. The second is a polite suggestion using the subjunctive mood.

Hi,

You might say #2 to send someone else to bed, eg your child.

But in #1, the speaker himself is involved.

Perhaps more common, and certainly shorter, is simply

It's bedtime

or

It's time for bed.

Best wishes, Clive
