Time that had elapsed/time that elapsed

The men who were still working on digging up the trenches were so deeply invested in their work that they barely noticed the time that had elapsed. A bomb then suddenly blew up taking out a few diggers. In the meantime, the sergeant was arguing with a lower officer.

Since time is something that is continuous should we use elapsed or had elapsed?
