Time span and the present perfect.

If my wallet was stolen a month ago, why can't I say:

My wallet has been stolen.

I guess you can say it in some circumstances:

Policeman: "Where's your wallet?"

You: "I don't have it, it's been stolen", the accent being on the result, that is you don't have your wallet.
