Time sequence with tenses

Good morning/afternoon/evening,

I am a bit confused about the use of the past perfect in some situations. Could you kindly confirm that I understand this correctly?

"What happened today?"
"Someone took my money, and I called the police."

Not "had taken" my money, right? Because the sequence is clear as it is, so I am just using the simple past.

However,
"What happened?"
"I called the police. Someone had taken my money."

Did I get this right?

Thank you very much in advance.
