Time rolled on

Hi,

We say days rolled by, or years rolled on etc.

But for seconds or minutes, what would be appropriate? Three seconds or three minutes rolled by/rolled on doesn't sound nice. Three seconds slipped by, is that acceptable? Or two minutes elapsed. Five minutes passed. What are the other options for seconds or minutes?

Thanks.

Really? That sounds cool. Thanks, G.

As Mr. Kalfe droned on about the economic consequences of the Boer War, the seconds plodded by like so many tired elephants.

All eyes were on him, especially Becky's. The final question in the pub quiz was now his, the question that would decide the winner. As he desperately struggled to remember who built the Panama Canal, the seconds flitted by like so many panicky chimney swifts.
