Time or times?

How do we determine whether we should add a 'S' at the end of 'time'? for example,

1. at the same time/s
2. at time/s
3. some time/s
4. many a time/s

Can someone clarify?

I don't think I understand the question. From what you've written, the answer seems very simple. Add an -s if it's plural; don't if it's singular - just as you would have done with any other word.

  • If you replace "time" with "tree" or "book" or "cat" or any other regular count noun, you'll get the same answer.

1. at the same time eg. We read the post at the same time.

2. at times ( to mean sometimes ) eg. The questions are not always tough, they are easy at times.

3. some time eg Let's meet some time next week.

Regarding item 4:

"Time" is a count noun. In the singular it's "a time", and in the plural it's "times". You can never say "a times", and more than you can say "a books" or "a cats". It would be meaningless. If you include the indefinite article "a" then you must omit the plural "s".
