time of year/the year

Autumn is the best season of (the) year. Is "the" a must?

The students learnt to tell (the) time? Is "the" a must? Thanks.

I sometimes read "...time of year". I believe I was reading a native speaker's work. This is all very confusing.

Specifically, "time of year" can be used without "the".

However, "season of year" doesn't sound right.

In AmE, "tell time" is fine. "The students learned to tell time."
