time distinction

Am I right about the historical distinction in the following text? I think that red and yellow colors belong to two different eras, yellow before the appearance of interaction between distinct intelligences and red after that. Having said that, can I therefore change "The mind possessed" to "The mind began to possess"?

Context:

Up until a critical time in our prehistory, Mithen explains, the four specialised cognitive domains were self-contained and there was very little interaction between them. The mind possessed a central general intelligence within which had evolved a suite of general-purpose learning and decision-making rules, conditioning behaviour at the interfaces of each domain. The use of tools for hunting reflects a combined technical and natural intelligence; the getting and preparing of food added to this reflects a social intelligence. Until around 60–70,000 years ago, there seems to have been incomplete cognitive fluidity.
