Time Clause Before and Past Simple and Past Continuous

Hi,

I have noticed that most of the dictionary examples are in the simple past for the time clause BEFORE.

Can anyone elaborate on the differences between the uses of past simple and past continuous when using time clauses such as before. I will write a few improvised examples.

1. She cried before I left. (Simple Past, Simple Past)

2. She cried before I was leaving. (Simple Past, Past Continuous)

3. She was crying before I was leaving. (Past Continuous, Past Continuous)

4. She was crying before I left. (Past Continuous, Simple Past)

If there is no difference here, can you think of other examples where the difference can be much clearer?
