Till the last

Consider the following sentence:

"So as not to put a damper on the evening . . . I waited TILL THE LAST and then asked their pardon for not singing for my supper because of our sad journey to Andrews AF Base."

Does 'til the last' mean 'til the last minute', and is it standard to say just 'til the last'?
