Which one is correct?

The robbers tied / roped up Mr and Mr Wong.

Hi, Which one is correct? The robbers tied / roped up Mr and Mrs Wong. 'Roped' is OK if they actually used rope, but 'tied' is much, much more common.

'Roped' is OK if they actually used rope, but 'tied' is much, much more common.
