Tidy vs. tidy up

Is there really any difference between tidy and tidy up ? Are there cases where, for example, the latter is more appropriate?

There are probably no situations where you need to add 'up', but it is a common formation. 'Up' usually adds a note of completion, thoroughness, or emphasis in such phrasal verbs: Clean up one's room. Hurry up and do your homework.
