tics and tocks

Thus it goes with this psyche. Story erupts, no matter how deeply repressed or buried. Whether in night-dreams, or through one's creative products, or the tics and tocks of neurosis, the story will find its way up and out again.

I remember I searched this phrase on the internet and it means the sound of clock. Nonetheless, I'm not sure if my memory is right and I can't find the source I have ever found. Could you tell me what it means ?

Just as cats say 'meow', clocks say 'tick-tock': it is the sound of the passing of time. 'Tics' are symptoms of neuroses: they are nervous twitches of the face or body. 'Tics and tocks' together is the writer's word play for long-time neurosis.
