Hi,
According to the Google Books Ngram viewer the two alternative spellings (thuya v thuja) are nearly "equally common" in AmEng. Anyway, which spelling do you use/hear other AmEng speakers use?
(Let me explain myself :) This shrub is pretty common in the area where I live... so this term is definitely worth "committing to memory" in my case :). Btw, is thuya common enough in your state/area? )
Looking forward to your comments.... Thank you!
I have never heard the term "thuja". It is a genus, so the name would be only familiar to botanists or tree specialists. In everyday language we only use the species names of the native trees that are members of this genus: arborvitae, western red cedar, northern white cedar (or the most common name: cedar)
