• thus vs. in addition

Hi!

I read the following in a TOEIC book:

“Since its inception, the bank has lent $28 billion: ______, its membership has grown to include 16 regional countries.

A. thus

B. on the whole

C. in addition

D. nevertheless

(Answer: C)” ((Longman Preparation Series for the New TOEIC Test, Advanced Course, 4th Edition, p. 136))

Do you agree with the above that C is the ONLY correct answer?

What about A? Isn’t there any possibility that A is correct?

Thanks in advance.

No. Not really. thus means in this way or because of this. In other words, in this example, it means

[By lending / Because they lent] $28 billion, its membership has grown to ... 16 ... countries.

There is nothing about lending a cert

You should use process of elimination to determine that answer choice C is the best answer. Answer choice D can flatly be eliminated. You cannot contrast the first part of a sentence with the second part if you’re going to use a colon. Answer choice B can be eliminated because “on the whole” is just wordy and sounds awkward. For example, all the other answer choices are much shorter in length.
