Thus and semicolon

Hello,

I needed a degree; thus, I went to school.

Are the semicolon and "thus" used correctly here?

Thanks.

Hi, Yes. My advice is not to get into the habit of using a lot of semi-colons. Clive

Yes, but are you sure you want "thus" ~ "in this way".

It seems to me that "therefore" works better with the logic of the situation.

I agree with CalifJim. Your usage of the semicolon is correct, but "therefore" is a better word choice. Therefore = for this/that reason. Thus = as a result. Using "thus" makes it sound like that was the only possible outcome/choice; whereas "therefore" implies a logical decision flowing out of the preceding condition.

Hi thanks for the replies.

Do you mean

I want to get a degree; therefore, I went to school.
or
I want to get a degree. Therefore, I went to school.

Thanks,

For such short sentences, I believe most style manuals recommend combining as in the first example.

Either one works for me.

Hi,

This would be more commonly said as eg
I needed to get a degree. so I went to school.
