Thus and Independent Clauses

Hi Everyone,

I would like to know why we can't use 'thus' to join two independent clauses.

Thanks,

The simple answer is because it is not a coordinator like "and", "or" and "but". "Thus" typically occurs as a (somewhat formal) connective adverb in adjuncts of result where it is in competition with "as a result" [1] We were late leaving and thus / as a result missed the train ". [2] We were late leaving.
