Thunderbirds are go!

In 1960-1970, there was a wonderful TV scientific fiction drama "Thunderbirds" played by marionettes.
In that drama, the narrator said, "Thunderbirds are go."

What is the meaning of "go"? Is it a verb or an adjective?

Thank you, Clive, for your comment.
I got it.

Then,

if it were standard expression instead of a slang expression, it would be;
"Thunderbirds are going", right ?

Hi,

I see it more as meaning 'Thunderbirds are ready to go'.
