Throw to or throw at

What is the diiference in the usage of the expressions " throw to" and "throw at" ?

Does "throw to" refer to the action of passing an object to somebody and "throw at" refer to the action of simply throwing an object in somebody's direction ?

Hi Deb, You're on the right track. but some fine tuning is required. Throwing an object to someone means actually throwing it through the air, not passing it hand to hand like, "Please pass the salt".

He threw the basketball 'to' his friend = He passed it to him/her with the good intention of possibly helping him/her score some points, or to facilitate a well-executed play.

He threw the basketball at his friend = He threw the basketball 'at' him/her with the malicious intent of causing a 'possible' injury (out of frustration or anger).
