Hi

Could you please tell me if the idiom throw one's voice is common among native speakers? Does it sound OK?

Alan was good at throwing his voice. [make it sound like it was coming from somewhere else]

Yes, here in the UK it's a perfectly normal thing to refer to. I would say it's not common, but there isn't a real alternative I can think of.

It's plain English in the US, too.

It was certainly a common way to refer to ventriloquism in my youth (1960s-70s, northeast US). But I don't think I've heard it in years. That may just be because ventriloquism acts are no longer popular.
