Throw off

Hi

If something "throws off" a lot of money I understand it gives a lot of money.

For example: Playing the market throws off a lot of money.

What do you think?

I don't think it sounds natural.

Hi

But is it possible that if something throws off money it gives the money?

It's not natural. I might think that, or I might think it's a big money waster, very inefficient.

I see. So it can have two meanings.

Thanks.

To be truthful, it has no meaning. Your reader will have to figure out what you mean. I urge you not to use this. It generates, creates, spawns, ... there are many ways to say what you mean. "Throws off" is not one of them.
