THROW IN with sb.

Recently, while listening to the conversation of two men I heard something like this: "The reason why I'm throwing in with xx people rather than with yy people is that I believe yy people."
What does this THROW IN mean? I've looked for it in many dictionaries but none seems to say a suitable (to the context above) explanation.
