Throw her back

Hi teachers,

1. Don't throw her back on the bench.

Does it mean that the person is rough handling the girl where he is pushing her back repeatedly on the back of the bench?

Thanks

No, it means that the coach of a female team is returning a player to the bench to sit out part of the game they are playing. ‘To throw her back on the bench’ is sometimes called ‘To bench her’ but by adding “throw” it indicates that the coach is disappointed with her performance.

Hi Willpeter,

A person is hitting her friend who is sitting on a bench with a back. The person keeps grabbing her shoulders and swing back and forth (I don't know how to describe this action.) And a passer-by say 'don't throw her back on the bench'.

Does the passer-by mean not to throw the girl's back against the back of of the bench because it could hurt her in the process?

Well, that’s an interpretation I hadn’t considered. It sounds as though you saw this in a video or movie, to be able to describe it so well. Not having witnessed it myself, I don’t think I could hazard a guess as to the passer-by’s meaning. I’ll let another member have a go at it.
