Throw a glance at

Is to throw a glance at/toward something just an expression that simply means to take a brief look at something or does it have a stronger meaning as for example an angry look? Because throw (or cast) come off more powerful to me?

And is there a difference between glancing at and glancing toward? If none, then what is your preferred?
