Through vs Via

Dear All,

I am a bit confused regarding when through should be preferred to via. So far, I think via is the right one when you get to your final destination by passing through another city (Bristol via Swindon), but one of the definitions of via in the dictionary is through. Are they interchangeable?

Regards,

George
