Through the ranks?

Hi. I found an expression I can't get the meaning of in the book with the title of 'Worship-centered Teaching'. Can you tell me precisely what the expression of 'through the ranks' means in the following passage. If you can, please send the answer to the address (Email Removed) Thank you so much for your help. Because of their numbers, millennials are putting a severe strain on school districts. Many school districts are using temporary buildings to accomodate all the students. Other districts have doubled or even tripled class sizes because of a lack of rooms and teachers. Many school districts are seeking levvy increases to ensure they have adequate funding to handle the numbers of students coming through the ranks.
