Through the can

Is the last sentence natural?
I was about to open a can of tuna when the cat came running into the kitchen. It's as if it could smell the tuna through the can.

Thanks

VIcky, I suspect the writer meant his or her own cat. The cat. Not some random cat from the street. If he/she has more than one cat, then "one of my/the cats."

Oh okay, my mistake. I guess it was a bit out of context.
Thank you.
