Through clenched/closed teeth

He gave me a forced smile and said goodbye through clenched/closed teeth.

Hi,
Do both clenched and closed fit in the above and mean about the same to you? Thanks.

they mean much the same but 'closed' is not idiomatic. Clenched also implies tension.

They both fit, but they don't have the same meaning. closed teeth is much less idiomatic, and it suggests mumbling to me. clenched teeth is a standard combination, and it suggests contained fury.
