Through, across, or over?

'Actually, the German boy escaped from the house and got to Spain (through/over/cross) France on foot.'Which is the correct preposition? I found three seemingly related example sentences from dictionaries./travelling across Europe//a plane flying low over the town//The line of traffic progressed slowly through the town.//the main road through the town/
