Throttle

Hi,

1) Could you tell me what 'throttle the return' means in this case?

“Look how aggressive she (Kvitova) is on the second serve. Nearly a metre inside and she is throttling the return on second serves tonight already.

2) "She banked her first set" - Does it mean that she won it?

3) "She batted back all of her opponent's deadly shots." - Could 'bat back' be used in this example?

Thank you so much.

1) I think that "throttle" is used in the sense of "strangle", meant to suggest in a very figurative way that she hits the returns with great force. e. as a secure asset.

  • e.
  • as a secure asset.
  • 3) Yes.
  • One could wonder how "deadly" shots could be "batted back", but perhaps this is being too picky.
