The rock star thrives on adulation of his friends.

What does THRIVE ON mean in this sentence? Does the write mean to say that rock star is rejoicing the complements he's probably receiving from his friends?
Thanks

I see. What else can be thrived on other than flattery? If possible use it in a sentence so I could get a clear idea of how it can be used.

Thanks.
