Thrive means 'grow' so then why is that I heard a native speaker say 'these girls are attention thrivers'. Did he mean the girls were 'attention growers'?!

'Thrive' for people means more 'flourish, prosper'.

Perhaps the speaker meant that the girls benefit from attention. But 'attention thrivers' is an odd phrase. Are you sure you heard it correctly?
