Thrilling and heart-swallowing?

Hi,

Can you look at this sentence?

Maybe you feel you already have a very happy home, as I’m sure many do. If you have a good home, you’ll sure want to keep it! Family life can be a little too similar to a roller coaster ride at a theme park – thrilling high points and heart-swallowing drops to low points.

Does "thrilling" mean excited and happy? "heart-swallowing" mean discouraged or disillusioned?

Thanks

Thanks for your valuable reply.

From the context after this paragraph, I can see he wants to say family life is changeable; sometimes it is enjoyable, and other times it is bitter.
He likens the family life to the roller coaster, because people riding the roller coaster may experience similar feelings.
So I think, although both periods are exciting, but one is positively exciting,

OK, then: positively exciting and negatively exciting.
