which one is correct?

I have explained the project to you for three times!

I have explained the project to you three times!

Which one is correct?

i think in some contect there is 'for' , but I can point out that. can you also explain when 'for' is used

How about

You have thought about it for a long time (I 'm pretty sure that it is correct)

and

You have thought about it a long time

Why sometimes it comes with for and not. Is there any way to learn when I should use 'for"?
