THREE-STRIKE

Dear Teachers,

1. What does "three-strike laws" mean?

2. Let me say to see whether I understand you right or wrong, ok?

- Is this natural?

3. "don't sweat it!" and "don't sweat!", which sentence is right?

4. Thanks for being a good sport. I'd buy you a beer.

- What does "sport" mean here? "dude" or 'buddy" or "friend", right?

5. Sadam Hudsen now still has WMD.

-What does "WMD" mean?

Thanks a lot to Teachers,

Stevenukd.

Also, #4 - I'll buy you a beer, not I'd.

Well, in "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, "old sport" means indeed "buddy," so that's possible, but see the post in the above also.

"old sport" and "good sport" are different things.

"old sport" is an old-fashioned term for a friend.

"good sport" is as Nona described above.

I think #1 is most often associated with drunk driving laws. Three strikes and your driver's license will be taken away.

Julie, not here. You lose your license on a first offense in many states for drunk driving. We need Jim to weigh in on this, but when I hear about a three-stike law, I think of California, where their three-strike law was, if not first, the most famous. If it's your third crime, even if it's very minor, you go to jail for a long time.

Jim - come join us!

I've just checked on the Californian 3-strike rule and you're spot on. Sorry! Emotion: smile

Yes, as Julie already found out, it is an extremely severe law. If you are found guilty of any crime, even a non-violent crime, and you have two previous convictions (I think these have to be very serious, but I'm not sure), then they put you away for a very, very long time indeed. Cases which make the news most often are those in which the third crime is something comparatively trivial li
