Three questions to this.

Hi teachers. Three questions to this:

The terrorists strided into the hotel lobby and fired into the air to put themselves in power.

1) Is 'fired' enough or should I add something to it?

2) Is 'put themselves in power' OK or what else could I say?

3) Is it possible to use 'fired into the air' when they're inside?

Thanks in advance.
