Three questions about general grammar

So i would like to know, if possible, the answers to these questions. They are for a girl that I tutor and I'm awful at grammar explanations. suffice to say that 'because that's how it is,' isn't the best answer. The more simple the explanation the better because English is not her first language..

1. Why do we say ..... We went on a school trip. Instead of .... We went as a school trip?

2. Why does yet come at the end of a sentence when other similar words don't.

e.g.

'Have you read that book yet?'

'Have you already read that book?

3. In the sentence 'My Favourite was the castle' ... what exactly is favourite noun, adjective etc?

Many thanks and sorry for the anomymous post.

Steven.
