Three questions

Big brown bears thunder through the deep woods, closing in on a remote site where campers waite, ready to squirt them.

1. That 'thunder' means ' to make, or move with a sound like thunder?

2. That 'them' denotes campers?

3. I can't interpret 'to squirt them'. Bears shooted out a liquid over the campers? Is that something like pee?
