Three hyphens to represent an em dash

Is it okay to use three hyphens as an em dash? Or is it strictly taboo to do so? I think their use below is quite easy on the eyes; does anyone agree?

Her qualities --- integrity, perseverance and dedication --- are to be admired.

I object! If you look real close-like, the hyphens aren’t quite as long as an em dash:
