"Three hours to the west"

Hi there

Can anyone tell me what "Three hours to the west" means?

Here's the complete sentence.
"Three hours to the west, he stood on the putting green at
the thirteenth hole, drinking his beer as Roger lined up for
a putt."

I know he was playing golf, but i can't figure out what " to the west" means.

Thanks in advance.

My guess would be that after whatever happened before this paragraph, or maybe while something else was happening at the original location) he traveled three hours to the west to play golf.

Or there was a reference to someone in one time zone, and he's three time zones west of there.

The previous context has identified a particular location.
to the west means west of that location.

three hours refers to the time that would be required to travel that distance west via the normal means of travel used in that area. Probably by car.

My guess is that he was located three time zones west of the previously mentioned place.
