Three days/ on three days/ for three days

I went there three days/ on three days/ for three days.

Which should be the correct one, when referring to how many days I went there?

However, I guess, using 'for' makes the sense ambiguous for it can mean either- I went there three times ( i.e. once each day) or- I went there to stay three days.

Please, let me know if my assumption is correct.
