Three abstruse sentences

Dear teachers and good answerers. I find three sentences below difficult to understand. I would be very grateful if you could give some explanations.

1. The substitute teacher attempted to end the student rebellion by insisting on absolute quiet.
Did the teacher (1) oppose the rebellion by being quiet or (2) request the students to be quiet ?

2. Always a strong pacifist, in later life he took to promoting actively the cause of peace and nonviolence
I cannot interpret this sentence, mainly because I don't know what 'the cause of peace' means.

3.The male and female leads in many situation comedies keep their relationship platonic for the first few seasons, but romance almost always wins out in the end.
Also this sentence I cannot do. What do 'romance' and 'win out' mean?
