Thousand over dollars

The lawyer asked his client, "Why did you take the two thousand over dollars?"

I know that "over two thousand dollars" is correct, but, to me, the sentence sounds awkward with the correct phrase.

Is it is awkward, how do native speakers phrase the sentence?

Thanks.
