Thousand or thousands

Hello,

So today I ran across a problem: For example, when you have a sentence:

I earn 2 thousand dollars a month. - The word "thousand" here doesn't take a plural here.

There were thousands of people at the party. - Here the word "thousand" is plural because you are saying that there were x thousand people.

When you have a question: "How many thousand/s are there in a million?" should there be plural or singular?

Could you explain it?

Thank you for your help
