Thourough analysis of seemingly the same meaning

Can I get a rich analysis of why seemingly similar sentences can have different meaning? What is the history of these differences? I am not interested in their classification actually.

The characteristics have been mentioned by John.
The characteristics were mentioned by John.
The characteristics mentioned by John.
John has been mentioning the characteristics.
