thought

Quote from a movie:

I thought General Eric is in charge. Shouldn't it be:

I thought General Eric was in charge.

And

I just arrived at the fitness center and they won't let me join. I say:

I came all the way from Texas. Or

I've come all the way from Texas.

Are both useable?

Thanks!
