Thought

I have a couple questions about mixing and matching verb tenses in a sentence:

1. I thought we were going out to eat tonight? This is what I would usually say and often hear others use.

But could this be said:

2. I thought we are going out to eat tonight?

It doesn't work for me! This seems to be a case where backshifting is mandatory.

Use only the past after thought and knew. It's much more idiomatic.
