This is a portion of an exercise on paragraph completion.


I think 'but' is not required here.

Please give your views.

In a side brimming with batsmen, he has frequently anchored his role to perfection. Though his style of batting was once regarded as too slow for the one day game, but through practice he has transferred himself into an integral part of the team.

I agree. "transferred himself into an integral part of the team" isn't quite right either. "he has frequently anchored his role to perfection" seems doubtful to me too.

I agree.

"transferred himself into an integral part of the team" isn't quite right either. "he has frequently anchored his role to perfection" seems doubtful to me too. I wonder if the author is really trying to say that he perfected his role of anchoring the team, or something like that.

Not only is it not required, but also deemed incorrect to have "though /but " in the same context.

I agree that, in this context, anchored his role does not sound right. More common is 'anchored his team'.

I agree with you. The subordinating conjunction 'though' introduces a subordinating clause (concessive adjunct), which serves to concede a certain fact. In this case, that fact is 'his style of batting used to be insufficient'. A problem that arises then is that the coordinating conjunction 'but' signals a contradiction and requires coordination with another main clause, i.e. one that

"not required" doesn't say it exactly. Rather than saying 'but' is not required, say that 'but' is forbidden there.

Alternately, remove the initial "though" and keep the "but".
