Though or Yet?

What is the difference between 'yet' and 'though' in the following passage:

"Vegetable fats, though/yet not as harmful as animal fats, can nevertheless result in gaining weight."

Welcome to English Forums, Chopper. I'd say that when "yet" is used to show contrast, it will immediately precede the (second) contrasting idea, and yet can not be used to introduce a pair of contrasting ideas the way "though" can. The word "yet" is used similarly to the word "but" in this case.

Thanks for your help!

In a practical sense I know the difference between yet and though but I was just struggling to find a clear and comprehendable definition. Your answer will make it much easier to elicit to my students.
