Could you please tell me if the following lines are natural, especially the yellow parts?

Though he knew that numerous misconceptions were rapidly growing in her mind, he kept ignoring it, and ultimately lost their relationship. Because by the time he approached her and tried to clear things up, too much water had passed under the bridge, a great deal of respect had been lost.

Though he knew that misconceptions were proliferating in her mind, he ignored them , and their relationship ultimately failed . By the time he approached her and tried to clear these up, too much respect had been lost. 'Water under the bridge' is a pretty boring cliche.
